This story opens while Charlie is out on Maternity leave with baby NadiaMark Ashford, owner and GM of the Vancouver Wolves, is respected and feared in the hockey world. He is a man of strong convictions and old fashioned values who often puts his unsuspecting recruits to the test. The party lifestyle so prominent in the league is a poison, according to him. It is a weakness that can infect the team if left unchecked. As for fighting, he has opinions on that as well. Now with their second Stanley Cup, the Wolves are a strong team but Mark doesn’t take his team’s success for granted. He has his eyes set on a rookie, an unknown out of Germany whose agent cannot seem to find him. This player’s talent is a rare find, yet he is an unknown in the states. When Mark sees his demo tape, he decides to take matters into his own hands. This rookie is going off the rails and risks losing his career. He needs a strong hand - someone to control him – and there is one agent who comes to mind that just might be able to accomplish that task.Krista Taylor, glamorous and fearless, runs an illustrious sports agency in Vancouver. It took twelve years of hard work to get to where she is today. She no longer has to chase down rookies to represent; she has a respectable roster of well-known names. Her reputation is sterling, and she strives to keep it that way. With five agents working under her, she is close to finally achieving her goal of making the Forbes’ list of the fifty most powerful sports agents. She is known to be a shark, a tough negotiator in a field full of men. She is also known for her good looks, though not many men can handle her. She commands any room she enters with her confidence and take-charge personality, and she holds nothing back when it comes to ensuring the success of her clients. The men that are up to the challenge of dating her must be able to accept her long work hours, not to mention her moods. Lately, though, she has been too busy to give much thought to dating.Krista owes a lot to Mark Ashford, whom she credits for much of her good business sense. Her sister Helene had been an Olympic figure skater when she was young, which led to Krista’s interest in ice hockey. While earning a marketing degree, she interned for the Wolves two summers; after graduation she landed a spot in Mark’s mentorship program. It was with Mark’s guidance that Krista built a career for herself. So when Mark asks her to catch a plane to Mexico to look for a rookie that he just has to sign, she reluctantly agrees. The rookie sounds high-risk, but she cannot turn Mark down.Levi Ziegler, twenty-two, had hoped to have a career in the NHL. After three years of playing hockey professionally in Europe, he left Germany behind about eight months ago. He finds himself living in Mexico with a group of buddies, living the party life day to day. His agent – his third now – is a total jerk. With training camp around the corner and nothing lined up, Levi has nearly given up on the idea of playing hockey professionally again. He spends his days surfing, and although he loves it, hockey will always be his sport of choice.Whenever he gets emotional, Levi needs to move, to be active. Levi was born in Ontario and spent his youth split between his mother in Canada and his father in Germany. At age twelve he lost his mother and moved permanently to Germany, where his father’s military service meant military boarding school for him. It wasn’t until he was finally sent to a hockey school that he began to find success. It gave him an outlet and helped him to focus. He has loved hockey ever since.Everyone seems to know and love Levi, a free spirit of sorts who impresses the crowds with his stunts. He loves the adrenaline rush. His buddies are loyal. And yet Levi manages to navigate through in a rather detached way. He is often emotionless and hard to read. He moved so much as he grew up that he learned never to get too attached to anyplace or anyone. So he indulges in Mexico’s surf and party atmosphere, always active, as he tries to move past the disappointment of his failed NHL career.Wow! Levi and Krista’s story really sucks you in. It is a very slow burn, and a long ride to reach their happy ending. First, though, about Krista’s age. It is never explicitly stated, but it took her twelve years of hard work to get to where she is today. If that measure began when she started college, that makes her about thirty; if it began after she graduated from college, that makes her about thirty-four. That makes this an age gap story, with a gap of roughly eight to twelve years. It is mentioned in the story, but the idea that it is a problem does not originate with either Levi or Krista. It becomes a consideration, but not a major problem. Their attraction is real, so it is rather nice that age is not a major consideration.Levi and Krista are similar in many ways, which helps to explain why their age gap is not a major factor in their relationship. First, neither talks openly about their feelings and background. They both hold back information, but at the same time neither pushes too hard. Their story is such a slow burn that their guardedness doesn’t become a real obstacle to their happiness. Levi and Krista also both felt somewhat alienated by their families growing up. Whether by circumstance or poor parenting, both felt unrooted and neglected. This led both to develop some self-esteem issues. As a result Levi is often overcome with guilt, which he in tern channels into physical activity. Krista, however, channels her inferiority complex into proving herself to her family, though around them she utterly fails. They both use that energy to drive their success. Finally, both have very strong defensive instincts. Krista uses her instincts to protect her clients. Levi’s instincts lead him to protect those close to him, which often leads to negative consequences for himself or even those around him. On the surface the pair is quite different. Krista is controlling and bossy, while Levi is more laid back. His friends are afraid of her, but he cannot get enough. He loves her moods and her attitude, perhaps relating to his urge to exercise.Levi’s endearing character sticks with you. He is full of contradictions. He is often selfless on the rink – a natural team player – yet he repeatedly fails to see that his actions will impact those around him. He is well-liked and popular but easily shifts to become the loner of the group. He usually won’t start a fight but he likes to fight. He exercises incredible patience and focus, but he also acts recklessly. When it comes to Krista, however, he has no problem playing the long game. Something about her makes sense to him and he sees himself being with her. He is surprisingly mature about his feelings for her.Levi and Krista have incredible chemistry together, but the true obstacle to them having a personal relationship is Krista’s career. She wants to represent Levi, which will get her on the Forbes’ list. But the IRC, the body responsible for ethics in the league, doesn’t like relationships between agents and their clients. Because Levi and Krista have instant chemistry but no history together, it makes no sense for them to make any sacrifices at the outset. But as they get to know one another over time, the temptation grows. The couple eventually earn their happy ending. But this is a very slow burn, so there is much more to the story. It is dense with action and obstacles. As a rookie, Levi must compete for a spot on the team. He faces team politics and player rivalries, and as a newcomer he is at a disadvantage. He doesn’t know who to trust when things get out of hand. His patience, however, is quite notable. He shows a maturity beyond his years, even if he does make some poor choices along the way. He just cannot seem to catch a break! Both Levi and Krista also face some drama from their past as danger enters the mix. This book has it all: romance, hot alpha, bossy heroine, sports, danger, and suspense. It is very well-written and grabs your attention from the first page. The plot is complex. It pulls you in and keeps the pages turning, though it feels a little slower toward the very end – maybe because the couple works so very hard to find happiness! The characters feel real. Krista is hard-working and no-nonsense. Levi is a free-spirit with a knack for finding trouble, but underneath it all he is searching for a place to call home. Levi and Krista have great chemistry and the tension between them is electric. The story is written in first person. The POV alternates between Krista and Levi. I rate this book 4.5 stars.I received an advance copy and am voluntarily leaving a review. I am a huge fan of the Vancouver Wolves hockey series. I mean any book that can make a girl interested in hockey is genius. (Never mind those women who already love hockey) This book was just as good as the rest in the series. I couldn’t put it down! However, I have issue with a few things in it. Not Levi— I loved Levi! But Krista, whom I loved so much from the other books, was seriously let down by the author. Such a strong, talented woman was brought down by her family and Levi, in a way. Firstly, the picture painted of a female sports agent tough enough to go up against top dogs in a male-dominated profession, was unable to stand up to her mother and sister? Who were actual, hardcore villains in this story. It just doesn’t track. Especially when Krista was the wronged individual. She was constantly brought down again and again, and yeah there was some comeuppance for her sister, but it wasn’t strong enough to combat what was being done to Krista. Krista never defended her self strongly enough. She has ample evidence to help her out of several messy family squabbles, but she never fired back. Which would be fine, it’s just such a contrast to the ball-busting, strong, fierce individual she’s been described to be throughout the series. The entire side-story with Krista’s family was completely frustrating. And then with Levi, the high-risk rookie. The author likes to paint this picture of him being willing to sacrifice everything in order to have Krista, but in the end he never really does. Sure, some things happen to remove the control from his hands, but he never really loses anything that he doesn’t get back tenfold. I think the author had a crush on her own character and she let Krista down just a bit. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the HEA guaranteed in this story came at a higher cost for Krista than anyone else and I think that sucks. It was a good story and highly entertaining, but I’m left a bit... ambivalent. Again, I love the story, love the series, love the author. But I think this story, of a powerful woman having to lose it all to have love, is one we don’t have to tell anymore. I wish this book had veered differently and stayed the course. That being said, I’m off to re-read Penalty Box. Because these truly are good books.
