I have just started to read this book and I already am confused: Why did he have to kill the girl? Don't they train police officers shoot but not kill in the situations like that described? Two shots in the chest - where he could aim at her arm, or leg, even shoulder to make sure it would not be lethal. As it happens, he kills her and that starts all his troubles, I guess. Already I do not feel sympathetic towards this hero...So, adding this 2 weeks later. Stars down to 1. I just cannot believe all the good reviews! It got to be the worst I have read in a while. Every cliche collected from every genre is in it. An ex policeman suffering depression and trying to drink himself to death. Friend-savior pulling him outta hole. Unexpected inheritance from long forgotten relatives. Meeting a woman who is both half mad and unstable and yet a beloved teacher to a bunch of difficult kids. Her half-wit brother who is very nice guy. Local crooks trying to make the hero to sell his inherited property. Dirty local policeman. And we just keep going on and on. The hero in fact is self-adoring ass... who totally forgot his uncle with whom, it looks like, he spent the best part of his childhood up to teen age. His memories about the time spent with his aunt and uncle at their lake house totally contradict the fact that he did not even KNOW his aunt died 3 years ago, and his uncle lived alone till he was hit and ran on the street of that small town, and then the lawyer looked up the heir. So the heir comes to see what he got and decides he wants to stay despite an offer of 2 mil for the property. He also decides to investigate his uncle death. Well, sorta - because after getting the file from the local sheriff he does not even open it but continues to wander around procrastinating, making romances with the mad teacher, aggravating the dirty policeman, and generally running around like a person possessed by demons. And it all is going on until the book progress shows me 90%. Then things finally happen: more cliche things, of course. The ex cop is always a cop so he takes justice in his own hands. And how lucky for him - troops arrive just in time to save his ass while he makes himself a real hero in the eyes of whoever wants to see it. OMG. Happy end at last! Ugh, reading this was an effort I am not proud of: should have dropped it right after the first couple chapters. Living in the area, this was a fun read - relatively short, good characters, straightforward plot. I had trouble with the description of the environmental hazards associated with potential mining near Spider Lake. The book suggested that the runoff would affect Lake Superior. However, the Spider Lake watershed winds up flowing to the Mississippi via Spider Creek, Chief River, and the Chippewa River. This discrepancy doesn't affect the plot, but I was surprised since so much of the local geography was dead on.
